Becstarr : Emerging from a kid hurricane to an empty nest

Just got back from visiting a full house of kids (5, 7, 9) and 6 adults up the Central Coast to an eerily quiet house. That's right: Matt and Zoe have flown the coop over the weekend, and Joel and I are empty-nesters! For the first time in my life I am savouring owning every shelf in the fridge (and pantry, and bathroom) and so on. Come to think of it, that's not quiet true as I was in that studio in Camden St for a while. OK, forget that particular rhetorical flourish, but it's still Very Exciting!

Shoshe - new windows!

We got new windows yesterday! It was particularly exciting because we'd been told that we wouldn't be getting them. Also, on our old windows, everything that wasn't glass was metal, meaning that there was a direct thermal contact from the outside (which last year got down to about -22C) to our attempting-to-be-cosy apartment. So the double-glazed glass part wasn't horribly cold, but the frame sure was. The new ones have plastic frames and extra-wide double glazing.

Mostly though, it's nice to not be offended by my windows' very existence. Who the fuck makes windows that have a direct thermal contact to the outside?! In a town where it gets down to -22C?!

Kit: So that's the reason why!

Looking at the hole in my couch made by trying to "quick fix" a small hole, suddenly made into a big melty hole: "So *that's* why you're supposed to test in an inconspicuous place first!".

Anna : Worst Case Scenario

Well the power in our house continued to be up and down all last week. The electrician came in on Friday, left a "tradesman trail" all through the house and ripped my parasol but declared that nothing was wrong. But when Guy touched the sink he was still getting shocks. So we waited to see whether the power would go out again, hoping against hope that it wouldn't go out on Sunday night after the hair dressers had closed ... 3.54pm *pop* down goes the power. We rush downstairs but not a hairdresser to be found ... *sigh* so Guy and I went out for a late lunch / early dinner and then sat about reading by candle light and then put on extra PJ's to sleep in our slowly cooling bed.

Anna : You're just too hip baby ... uh huh huh

As I walked home last night the "cool" people seemed to be out in force. A Voltron black lion t-shirt, several shamelessly hip tattoos and me, filthy and smelly from boxing in a 35 degree room ... luckily I had my Bec-approved asymmetrical 'do!

Other news, our sink has become electrified and the blackouts are now daily so something's awry in the state of Yorga.
